Will new Pakistan PM challenge US agenda?

That is a question I ask in my most recent piece on Pakistan, published today in NewMatilda.com:

On the afternoon of Tuesday 25 March, Yousaf Raza Gilani was sworn in as Pakistan's 26th Prime Minister.

The ceremony was noteworthy for a number of reasons. For one, Gilani took his oath from President Musharraf, the same man who had him jailed on corruption charges seven years earlier. Gilani spent the next five years in prison for his troubles. Now Gilani's coalition government is very publicly seeking to remove Musharraf from office.

The new PM was like a fresh breath of air for Pakistanis. The new governemnt came with good intentions but there is tremendous pressure from The US to collaborate with Musharraf. We don't know what would be the out come but any democratic government would be better than Mushy dictatorship.

I wish it were that simple. I hope you have been keeping up with the developments in Pakistan to find that the new PM is just another face to the same old rubbish that we have always had.

Yes he seems to be Zardari's 'chumcha' and frankly I'm not surprised democracy has stagnated again. Depressing stuff.
